POLYGONS

Objectives
  • Define, identify and illustrate different kinds of polygons according to the number of sides
  • Identify the parts of a regular polygon: interior, exterior and the points on the polygon itself.
  • Differentiate convex from non-convex polygons.
 What is a polygon?

  • A closed plane figure formed by fitting together segments end to end with each segment intersecting exactly two others
  • Each line segment is called a side of a polygon.
  •   Each endpoint where the sides meet is called the vertex of the polygon.
  •  Classified according to the number of its sides.
 Classification of Polygons

  How to name a polygon?
  • To name a polygon, the vertices are listed in consecutive order.

What are the parts of a polygon?
  • Interior of the polygon
  • Exterior of the polygon
  • Points on the polygon itself

What is the difference between convex and concave polygons?
  • A polygon is convex if no diagonal is in the exterior of the polygon.
  • A polygon is concave if at least one diagonal is in the exterior of the polygon.

 Summary

    •       A polygon is a closed plane figure formed by fitting together segments end to   end with each segment intersecting exactly two others.
    •       It is classified according to the number of its sides.
    •       The parts of a polygon are: the interior, the exterior and the points on the           polygon itself.
    •       A polygon may be convex or concave.
